Quien primero utiliza de manera formal el término estética es el filósofo alemán Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714-1762), quien después de varios trabajos sobre poesía, define una aproximación filosófica a la idea de lo bello, y la aplica luego a los problemas del conocimiento sensorial. Si bien Baumgartner no es es primero que aborda la problemática de la belleza como hecho que se debe ver desde un punto de lógica gnoseológica aplicada a la sensibilidad cognoscitiva, sí será quien acuñe el vocablo que la identifica.
