Lordscairnie Castle - 13 of 13 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
The 'modern' Lordscairnie Farm buildings in the background - no doubt containing much of the castle's stonework! The lands of Cairnie were held by the Lindsay family from well before 1355 - at which date they granted parts of it to Lindores Abbey, no doubt in penance for their considerable sins! The infamous Alexander Lindsay, 4th Earl of Crawford, otherwise known as “Earl Beardie”, had two sons: David, who became 5th Earl of Crawford, and Alexander Lindsay of Auchtermonzie (aka Auchtermoonzie), of which estate, (Lords)cairnie formed a part. Alexander, with no expectations of inheriting the earldom, was probably quite content to develope his own Fife estate, where between about 1495 and 1500 he built the castle we see here today. Meanwhile, his brother the 5th Earl also produced two sons (the traditional “heir and a spare”!). The elder son, Alexander Master of Crawford, who had married a daughter of the Gordon Earl of Huntly, died (without children) in suspicious circumstances in 1489. His younger brother John therefore became 6th Earl of Crawford when the 5th Earl died in 1495. John the 6th Earl was accused, along with his sister-in-law, of murdering his elder brother, however the enquiry was brought to an abrupt close in 1513, when the Earl, along with much of the rest of the Scottish nobility, was killed at the battle of Flodden. The 6th Earl having died childless, the earldom passed to his uncle, Alexander Lindsay of Auchtermonzie, who had been living quietly in his new castle of Lordscairnie! The 7th Earl was no doubt obliged to move to Finavon Castle, the seat of the Crawford earldom. He died only a few years later, in May 1517. I have told the story before of how his son, David 8th Earl of Crawford, was imprisoned in Finavon, by his own son – ‘The Wicked Master’! (See www.flickr.com/photos/62445171@N00/3876883263/in/set-7215... ) By the 17th century, Lordscairnie Castle was no longer used by its noble owners. The Hall of the castle is said to have been used for a while for worship, by an Episcopal congregation, following the abolition of episcopacy in the years following the reformation.

Wanderings in a Haunted Kingdom: Synchronicity, or something
I collect legends, and I'm always struck by how similar legends can be in different parts of the country. Scotland has a wealth of Green Ladies, White Ladies and Grey Ladies, and more Smothered Pipers than you could shake a set of bagpipes at.
