Meroë /ˈmɛroʊeɪ/ (also spelled Meroe) (Meroitic: Medewi or Bedewi; Arabic: مرواه Meruwah and مروى Meruwi, Ancient Greek: Μερόη, Meròe) is an ancient city on the east bank of the Nile about 6 km north-east of the Kabushiya station near Shendi, Sudan, approximately 200 km north-east of Khartoum. Near the site are a group of villages called Bagrawiyah. This city was the capital of the Kingdom of Kush for several centuries. The Kushitic Kingdom of Meroë gave its name to the Island of Meroë, which was the modern region of Butana, a region bounded by the Nile (from the Atbarah River to Khartoum), the Atbarah and the Blue Nile.
The city of Meroë was on the edge of Butana and there were two other Meroitic cities in Butana, Musawwarat es-Sufra and Naqa.
The site of the city of Meroë is marked by more than two hundred pyramids in three groups, of which many are in ruins. They are identified as Nubian pyramids because of their distinctive size and proportions.

Located on the east-bank of the Nile and approximately 250 kilometers north-east of the Sudanese capital, the ancient city of Meroë was once the heart and the capital of the Kingdom of Kush. The archaeological site of Meroë is the seat of more than two-hundred pyramids that are roughly spread into three groups. This site is one of the UNESCO world heritage sites. The Nubian Pyramids are miniature versions of their Egyptian counterparts. Moreover, this site has been ruined. An Italian explorer, Ferlini is infamously credited for plundering the site. It is believed that Ferlini shattered the pyramids in search of gold and other invaluable goods and antiquities. The site is now one of the 'must-see' things on the to-do list of a tourist. However, the tourism department of the country is not involved with the maintenance of this attraction. The site is open to visit for all. Locals from the nearby villages can be found selling artifacts.
