New Boat Industry training program to aid local industry - Manufacturing - Nova News Now
With assistance from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the College of the North Atlantic (CNA) plans to develop a new boat industry training program. The provincial government has committed $122,440 to the program that is geared towards new boat builders and assisting existing workers upgrade their skills.&quotBoat building represents an important sector for the province,&quot said Trevor Taylor, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. &quotThrough CNA’s new program we will have the opportunity to graduate a new generation of boat builders, which opens up tremendous opportunities for the province. For our economy to grow, a constant supply of well-trained people is required – this is especially true of the boat building industry.&quotThe export potential to international markets for the province’s boat building industry is strong. Industry and academic representatives, along with the provincial and federal governments, identified that to grow the local industry in export markets a training program was required. After further discussion it was determined that a program offering classroom and on-the-job training was the best approach.&quotWe are very excited to be moving forward with this new area of training, which will support the development and diversification of the local boat building industry,&quot said Jean Madill, President of College of the North Atlantic. &quotThe college has worked closely with the provincial boat building sector to assess the need in developing an appropriate training program that will result in highly-skilled workers which are required to allow this industry to grow in Newfoundland and Labrador.&quotThe three-year pilot program is designed to graduate 15 skilled boat builders. The in-class portion will be delivered in the first year of the program at the Seal Cove Campus of CNA. In years two and three, students will work under master craftsmen allowing them to acquire practical experience. In addition, on-the-job training will be available for up to 35 existing workers at boat yards around the province to improve their skills.&quotThe provincial government’s investment to the College of the North Atlantic and the Boat Industry Training Organization pilot project is another example of our government’s commitment to innovative and novel education,&quot said the Tom Hedderson, MHA for Harbour Main. &quotHaving the program located in Seal Cove is a great asset for the CNA campus and the students they train. In addition, by delivering the on-the-job training segment of this program in boat yards around the province, our government will be helping to develop jobs in rural Newfoundland and Labrador.&quotThe program is funded by the Provincial Government’s Regional/Sectoral Diversification Fund (RSDF). RSDF is a $5-million fund that provides non-repayable contributions to economic development agencies for initiatives that address regional and sectoral development and diversification.

Muncipalities laud infrastructure spending, money for firefighting - News - The Compass
The province is pumping a record $135.5 million into municipal infrastructure around the province this year. &quotThere's a good deal of infrastructure money there that is badly needed. In fact, it's the largest amount of money that's ever been spent on infrastructure in the province. Good stuff,&quot said Harry Hallett, president of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, also the mayor of Leading Tickles.Overall, Hallett said the budget is fair considering the times. The province's spending on municipal infrastructure - up 22 per cent over last year - will help municipalities get $53.4 million from the federal government, it was announced in Monday's budget. With towns and cities throwing in their share, total spending on municipal infrastructure will be $225 million.Municipalities are also being given $2.5 million to buy fire trucks this fiscal year, as part of a $7.6-million four-year project. They will also get $1 million this year to help upgrade and replace firefighting equipment.Corner Brook Mayor Neville Greeley said the budget is great for the province as a whole, but was pleased with what municipalities got - money for roads, fire trucks and equipment and other infrastructure.&quotFrom the municipalities' perspective it was a good news budget,&quot Greeley said.Woodrow French, mayor of Conception Bay South said it was a pleasure to hear the provincial finance minister announce increases in infrastructure spending for roads, bridges and buildings.Four years ago, his town identified about $120 million worth of infrastructure projects.Topping the list are a new stadium and town hall.&quotWe're looking forward to funding for our infrastructure needs, such as a town hall, stadium and other recreational items that we need,&quot French said.&quotWe're working on that. If it takes us eight or 10 years to do, we'd be happy with that - as long as we keep moving forward.&quotFrench said town employees are in different buildings all over town and the stadium is &quotbusting at the seams.&quot&quotThe problem we've got is we're a town now that's bigger than the City of Corner Brook. People are demanding the services, and because we don't have a business base, it's really difficult to do it.&quotSo, seeing an increase from the provincial government is certainly good news for us.&quotFrench was also pleased to hear the C.B.S. bypass extension will go to tender this year and the College of the North Atlantic campus in Seal Cove will get $2.5 million in upgrades.
