Dahlgren cannon
Dahlgren guns were muzzle loading naval artillery designed by Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren USN (November 13, 1809 – July 12, 1870), mostly used in the period of the American Civil War. Dahlgren's design philosophy evolved from an accidental explosion in 1849 of a 32-pounder being tested for accuracy, killing a gunner. He believed safer, more powerful naval cannon could be designed using more scientific design criteria. Dahlgren guns were designed with a smooth curved shape, equalizing strain and concentrating more weight of metal in the gun breech where the greatest pressure of expanding propellant gases needed to be met to keep the gun from bursting. Because of their rounded contours, Dahlgren guns were nicknamed "soda bottles", a shape which became their most identifiable characteristic.

Since we are now well acquainted with this gun's story, time for a "walk around." Metal B: Dahlgren 1861 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Project Flickr: Metal Along with some wood. Since I posted the wheels and axel for a different cannon I thought I'd post a full version. This is a replica of the Dahlgren 1861 that was used in the American Civil War. As the cannon is pictured it is a display model only, but I have a different barrel in the states that can be swapped and turn this into a real shooting black powder cannon. We used to target shoot these a lot when I lived in the states, this particular cannon has a 45 caliber shootable barrel that can consistently shoot inside a three inch circle at fifty yards. PR does not have black powder available and any cannon that will actually shoot is illegal to own. That is why all the fun stuff is back in the states and I have cannons with display only barrels here. To give an idea of the size, the barrel on this cannon is a little over eight inches long and is the smallest one I have. I should add that not all of this cannon was built by me. I found part of this collecting dust in an antique store and purchased it and then built the missing pieces myself. It was missing one wheel and all the chains and several smaller parts that I had to build, along with the barrels. P.S. The smoke from the barrel is incense that is burning inside of the barrel, although I like the added feature to simulate it was just fired.
