Gottschalk of Orbais
Gottschalk (also Godescalc, Gotteschalchus) of Orbais (c. 808 – October 30, 867?) was a Saxon theologian, monk and poet who is best known for being an early advocate of the doctrine of two-fold predestination. Gottschalk of Orbais | Soliloquium
As I continue the explore the fascinating world of medieval Christianity, I have come across a very interesting theologian from the 9th century, Gottschalk of Orbais. (When Esther and I were considering baby names for our forthcoming son, I thought Gottschalk should be in the running, but shockingly, Esther was not with me.) Over Christmas break…

Gottschalk: Turning the World Upside Down | Gottschalk
The Medieval Church of the 9th century was filled with controversy and apostasy. However, from time to time, voices of hope would rise up and stand for sound doctrine even if it was not popular to do so. Though these individuals were imperfect people who had many flaws; they, nevertheless, stood for the perfect truth…

Exiled Preacher: Gottschalk of Orbais a medieval "Five Point Calvinist"
Indeed, just as He [God] predestined all of the elect to life through the gratuity of the free grace of His kindness, as the pages of the Old and New Testaments very clearly, skillfully, and soberly show those seeking wisdom on this matter, so also He altogether predestined the reprobate to the punishment of eternal death, of course, through the most righteous judgment of His immutable justice. (Reply to Rabanus Maurus, Gottschalk of Orbias) In his book, The Reformation's Conflict with Rome: Why it must Continue! (reviewed here), Robert Reymond mentioned Gottschalk as one of the few medievals to have a clear conception of Paul's teaching on salvation by grace alone (see p.

Forthcoming Translation of Gottschalk of Orbais | Francis Gumerlock
I am very happy to announce a forthcoming translation of writings by Gottschalk of Orbais, a ninth-century monk who spent twenty years in prison for preaching a view of divine predestination that diverged from the mainstream. Of his writings, some were lost after his death, and none enjoyed considerable circulation.

Social Sciences - Gottschalk of Orbais: A study of power and spirituality in a ninth-century life
]]> Title Gottschalk of Orbais: A study of power and spirituality in a ninth-century life Abstract This dissertation is concerned with how much and what sort of power one individual—Gottschalk of Orbais (806–868)—exercised in the Carolingian Empire. Although he was a figure without high rank, Gottschalk wielded considerable influence among his contemporaries and caused many controversies during his tumultuous career as a monk, missionary and theologian.

Contra Mundum: Gottschalk on Limited Atonement
“He who knows God’s work in Jesus Christ will undoubtedly admit without hesitation and joyfully state that the loving redeemer redeemed absolutely all Whom He redeemed from eternal death at such a price and that He gave them all eternal life. Let them deny this, if they want, who love the dregs more than the oil, the grape skins or seeds more than wine, chaff and weeds more than wheat, kids and goats more than sheep and lambs, because they perhaps come from them.
