H.T. Yau
Horng-Tzer Yau (姚鴻澤) is a Taiwanese-American mathematician. Born 1959 in Taiwan, he has a B.Sc. in 1981 from National Taiwan University and a Ph.D. in 1987 from Princeton University. He joined the faculty of NYU in 1988, and became a full professor at its Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences in 1994. He moved to Stanford in 2003, and then to Harvard University in 2005. He has also been a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., in 1987-88, 1991-92, and 2003.
According to William C. Kirby, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard, "Professor Yau is a leader in the fields of mathematical physics, ... who has introduced important tools and concepts to study probability, stochastic processes, nonequilibrium statistical physics, and quantum dynamics."

The Shape of Inner Space: String Theory and the Geometry of the Universe's Hidden Dimensions
2010
String theory says we live in a ten-dimensional universe, but that only four are accessible to our everyday senses. According to theorists, the missing six are curled up in bizarre structures known as Calabi-Yau manifolds. In The Shape of Inner Space, Shing-Tung Yau, the man who mathematically proved that these manifolds exist, argues that not only...

Energies | Free Full-Text | Performance Analysis and Optimization of a Solar Powered Stirling Engine with Heat Transfer Considerations
This paper investigates the optimization of the performance of a solar powered Stirling engine based on finite-time thermodynamics. Heat transference in the heat exchangers between a concentrating solar collector and the Stirling engine is studied. The irreversibility of a Stirling engine is considered with the heat transfer following Newton's law. The power generated by a Stirling engine is used as an objective function for maximum power output design with the concentrating solar collector temperature and the engine thermal efficiency as the optimization parameters. The maximum output power of engine and its corresponding system parameters are determined using a genetic algorithm.

Applications of Fuzzy Sliding Mode Control for a Gyroscope System
Abstract and Applied Analysis is a mathematical journal devoted exclusively to the publication of high-quality research papers in the fields of abstract and applied analysis. Emphasis is placed on important developments in classical analysis, linear and nonlinear functional analysis, ordinary and partial differential equations, optimization theory, and control theory. Abstract and Applied Analysis supports the publication of original material involving the complete solution of significant problems in the above disciplines. Abstract and Applied Analysis also encourages the publication of timely and thorough survey articles on current trends in the theory and applications of analysis.

Two young scientists break down plastics with bacteria | Video on TED.com
Once it's created, plastic (almost) never dies. While in 12th grade Miranda Wang and Jeanny Yao went in search of a new bacteria to biodegrade plastic -- specifically by breaking down phthalates, a harmful plasticizer. They found an answer surprisingly close to home.

Molecular Cancer | Full text | Over-expression of BCAT1, a c-Myc target gene, induces cell proliferation, migration and invasion in nasopharyngeal carcinoma
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a common malignant tumor in southern China and Southeast Asia, but its molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis are poorly understood. Our previous work has demonstrated that BCAT1 mRNA is over expressed in NPC and knocking down its expression in 5-8F NPC cell line can potently inhibit cell cycle progression and cell proliferation. However, the mechanism of BCAT1 up-regulation and its functional role in NPC development remain to be elucidated yet.

Map: United States of surnames
Map: United States of surnames January 27, 2011 | Mapping Mina Liu and Oliver Uberti for National Geographic examine the most common surnames across the country: What's in a Surname? A new view of the United States based on the distribution of common last names shows centuries of history and echoes some of America's great immigration sagas. To compile this data, geographers at University College London used phone directories to find the predominant surnames in each state.
