HMS Pactolus
Two Royal Navy ships have carried the name HMS Pactolus, after the river in which, according to legend, King Midas washed his hands to divest himself of the golden touch.
- The first Pactolus was a frigate built in 1813 and was decommissioned in 1817.
- The second Pactolus was a Pelorus class cruiser built in 1896 and sold for scrap in 1921.

“Don’t let the utilitarian cover art fool you. It’s perfect for the book’s purpose – an owner’s manual. But the exterior merely camouflages a priceless, but exceedingly economical, treasure. While I occasionally give five stars to exceptional books, HMS Victory Owners’ Workshop Manual far exceeds that rating.” - Pirates and Privateers

Log Lines hopes its readers stayed dry, or at least safe, on Monday as Hurricane Sandy roared across the Northeast. Storms like this are nothing new to the eastern seaboard, of course, and for as long as anyone has cared to record such things, strong weather events (as the meteorologists like to call them) have thrilled and terrified us.
