In January, 2012, Slabbed blog publisher Douglas K. Handshoe demonstrated a remarkable memory: Remember back in the late 90s several state legislators were indicted along with certain people in the video poker business? One of the allegations centered on then State Senator Larry Bankston making people in need of legislative help rent his Florida Condo at an inflated price.

Marion "Sugar" Lauricella, founder of Harahan Christian Church, dies at 81 | NOLA.com
Pastor Marion "Sugar" Lauricella, founder of Harahan Christian Church and tireless community crusader who shipped hundreds of thousands of pounds of donated food, water and other goods to the poor and disaster victims around the globe, died Thursday at East Jefferson General Hospital in Metairie. He was 81. Lauricella was a non-denominational minister with a folksy air, but had a wheeler dealer talent for rounding up large amounts of provisions, according to his son, Kerry Lauricella. He fed families devastated by flooding in Missouri, sent truckloads of eyeglasses to Mexico and helped dig water wells in Africa. Most recently, he sent food for earthquake victims in Haiti and was helping residents affected by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. "He was loved by the whole community," said Lauricella's first cousin, former state Sen. Hank Lauricella. "Really, he was just a wonderfully, delightful person that was open to helping anyone, anywhere." Lauricella was born in Destrehan, but grew up in the "S-curve" of Jefferson Highway in Harahan, back when the small town numbered only 1,000 residents. Lauricella graduated from the former Kenner High School, but Kerry Lauricella joked that he is fuzzy on the date because his father always fibbed...
