Law of homogeneity
The Transcendental Law of Homogeneity (TLH) is a heuristic principle enunciated by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz most clearly in a 1710 text entitled Symbolismus memorabilis calculi algebraici et infinitesimalis in comparatione potentiarum et differentiarum, et de lege homogeneorum transcendentali (see Leibniz Mathematische Schriften, (1863), edited by C. I. Gerhardt, volume V, pages 377-382). Henk J. M. Bos describes it as the principle to the effect that in a sum involving infinitesimals of different orders, only the lowest-order term must be retained, and the remainder discarded. Thus, if is finite and is infinitesimal, then one sets
.
Similarly,

where the higher-order term du dv is discarded in accordance with the TLH. A recent study argues that Leibniz's TLH was a precursor of the standard part function over the hyperreals.

Elite law schools are letting down their students because of 'intellectual homogeneity,' op-ed says
Elite law schools are “bastions of liberalism” that are failing their students because of their “intellectual homogeneity,” according to an op-ed by a Harvard law student. Joel Alicea, organizer of a Federalist Society conference on intellectual diversity, says the lack of conservative views means that many students at top law schools graduate “without having encountered a cogent articulation of conservative views in the classroom.” He expresses his opinion in an article for the Washington Times. Alicea backs up his liberal-bastion claim with data from a 2005 study that found 94 percent of faculty members at Stanford Law School who made political contributions gave exclusively or mostly to Democratic candidates. He also refers to a statement by a Georgetown law professor who says the ratio of liberal to conservative faculty at his school is 116 to 3. “My own experience as a student at Harvard Law School is…

The “law of homogeneity” in the church | Mission Minded
One of the (possibly the only) downsides of the high profile Desmond Tutu had in the 1980s and 1990s is that other eloquent, faithful, and prophetic African Anglican leaders were overshadowed. I thought about that as I was preparing for my class on Sudanese church history last week. Bishop Francis Loyo of Rokon has been…

Innovation in law: are you one of us? | Lawyer Watch
Debates about innovation in law can be a bit tribal. The Creative Destroyers decry the billable hour. They mock Big Law as a broken model and see law as a dusty rule book in need of big data and a scientific reinvention. Law is vastly complex and inefficient. More traditional folk point to the resilience…

Week in Review | Via Meadia
This week, we took a look at how mass immigration in Europe is posing a serious threat to the welfare states that most of the continent has been building for the past half-century: Europe’s social engineers of the last generation seem to have assumed that the “dark forces” of nationalism and chauvinism had been left behind. That was partly true; the horrors of the two world wars have made many (though far from all) Europeans unwilling to fight anymore on ethnic grounds.
