Magallanes Region of Chile
The Region of Magellan, officially the XII Region of Magellan and Chilean Antarctica (Spanish: XII Región de Magallanes y de la Antártica Chilena), is one of Chile's 15 first order administrative divisions. It is the southernmost, largest, and second least populated region of Chile. It comprises four provinces: Última Esperanza, Magellan, Tierra del Fuego, and Antártica Chilena.
Magellan has many globally known places and geographical features including Torres del Paine, Cape Horn, Tierra del Fuego island, and the Strait of Magellan. It also includes the Antarctic territory claimed by Chile.
The main economic activities are bovine farming, oil extraction, and tourism. This region is also home of the Patagonian Expedition Race.

The history of the South American megafauna is a fascinating topic. For much of the Cenozoic Era South America was an island continent in which the carnivores were all marsupials and the herbivores were primitive ungulates that evolved into forms functionally similar to unrelated animals found elsewhere in the world. Chile ends restrictions on salmon farming in Magallanes | Undercurrent News

This could allow the Chilean industry to increase salmon production and to approach Norway’s volumes, reported the Chilean news outlet Pulso. The fist licenses in Magallanes are likely to be granted later this year or in early 2014, said Jose Miguel Burgos, head of the fisheries and aquaculture directorate Subpesca’s aquaculture division. The restrictions on Magallanes were imposed in 2010 following the infectious salmon anemia (ISA) that ravaged farms in Chile. Already more than 1,000 orders have been lodged for concessions in the southern tip of Chile, and about 300 applications are located within the areas considered national parks, said Pulso. But, since they are protected areas by the state and by the fisheries act, they cannot be developed. Magallanes only accounts for 3.21% of Chile’s salmon production, with some 33,000 metric tons. Most salmon production is concentrated in Los Lagos and in Aysen, but the moratorium for the license allocation is effective until 2015 in both of these regions.

In 2012 exports rocketed to $174m from $40m registered in 2010. This growth is due to a simultaneous harvest of the three companies producing in the Chilean region of Magallanes — Mainstream, Nova Austral and Salmones Magallanes — and evidences the industry recovery after the ISA virus, reports Diario Financiero. “Until 2010 there was only one salmon producer, today there are three companies with important growth projects at regional level, although we contribute to less than 5% of national production,” the chairman of the Association of salmon producers from Magallanes Drago Covacich said. Magallanes is seen as one of the key regions in Chile for salmon production, with important economic projections. “From 2012, salmon has overtaken methanol exports, another important product from the region,” ProChile regional director Diana Kusanovic said. According to ProChile, seafood exports from the region totaled $345m in 2012, of which salmon contributed 50%, with $174m. By September this year, however, salmon exports went down totaling $86m due to a decrease of harvests.
