Olynthus
For the butterfly genus, see Olynthus (butterfly).
Olynthus (Ancient Greek: Ὄλυνθος Olinthos, named for the olunthos, the fruit of the wild fig tree) was an ancient city of Chalcidice, built mostly on two flat-topped hills 30–40m in height, in a fertile plain at the head of the Gulf of Torone, near the neck of the peninsula of Pallene, about 2.5 kilometers from the sea, and about 60 stadia (c. 9–10 kilometers) from Poteidaea. Artefacts found during the excavations of the site are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Olynthos.

Megas Alexandros: Olynthus and its houses
Several months ago in the frame of the exhibition on Alexander the Great at the Hermitage in Amsterdam, I attended a lecture about Macedonia where one of the subjects treated was the city of Olynthus. To me, Olynthus was a city repeatedly besieged by King Philip, Alexander’s father, in his attempt to create a united Macedonia and in the end he razed it from the map, flattening the entire place in a final crush.

The Development of Industry and Commerce in Olynthus | Economics Papers,Economics Term Paper,Economics Research Paper
Our historical research about the development of economy in Ancient Greece was usually focus on a few distinguished citis, such as Athen and Sparta.Little attention was paid to other cities in Ancient Greece, which has left a academic gap.On the other hand, since the research about Ancient Greece always came from the historical documents which came down a long time ago ,especially the documents which were written by some famous writers in Greece,it might contain some mistakes.Excavated by David Moo
