Ommatokoita elongata
Ommatokoita elongata, is a 30 mm (1.2 in) long pinkish-white parasitic copepod, frequently found permanently attached to the corneas of the Greenland shark and Pacific sleeper shark. The parasites cause severe visual impairment, but it is thought that the sharks do not rely on keen eyesight for their survival. It is the only species in the genus Ommatokoita.

Ommatokoita elongata is common on the corneas of the Greenland shark, as Scoresby said it was. The vast majority of these sharks have been reported to have the parasite on both eyes, and only 1 percent are free of it (Kabata 1979).

Animal A Day!: Greenland Shark
Somniosus microcephalus Today's Shark is one of my all time favorites-- they are just so unique! Greenland Sharks live farther north than any other Shark species in existence, swimming in the cold waters of Greenland, Iceland, and the North Atlantic. They can also grow to lengths over 20ft, allowing them to rival the Great White in size.
