Darwin's Bane. Ichneumon Wasp, Vulgichneumon saturatorius, on Wild Parsnip, Pastinaca sativa, Stuw Weringsdijk, De Onlanden, Drenthe, The Netherlands | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Those antennae... When she's ready - after having sated herself - our Ichneumon Wasp strokes the back of an unsuspecting caterpillar with them hypnotising as it were her prey. With her hyper-sharp stinger she then easily and quickly pricks through unaware Caterpillar's ultra-thin skin. She injects a single egg which in time will give birth to as many as 500 tiny young wasps. But before that Caterpillar is literally eaten slowly but surely from inside out. First its body fats yield to voracious wasp grubs, then its organs and finally even the inside scrapings of its skin. Such a wonder of nature... but many who like to consider Good Nature anthropomorphically are aghast. To a friend great Charles Darwin writes: 'I cannot persuade myself that a beneficient and omnipotent God would designedly have created the Ichneumonidae with the express intention of their feeding on the living bodies of caterpillars or that a cat should play with mice.' Here then is Ichneumon Wasp (in Dutch more appropriately - given the description of her relations with Caterpillar - called a 'Sluipwesp', a 'Stealth-wasp'). There are so many hundreds if not thousands of kinds of Ichneumons that it's hard to say who exactly she is. I hazard Vulgichneumon saturatorius, but please correct me if I'm wrong. She's collecting pollen or drinking nectar from Wild Parsnip, Pastinaca sativa. This pretty scene unfolded before my eyes at a little sluice in the Weringsdijk which runs through the Onlanden of Drenthe not far from Groningen.

A large, weedy species closely related to the carrot, it is found virtually everywhere in the United States with the exception of the lower southeast.
