Polygamy in Zimbabwe
While prohibited under civil law, polygamous marriages may be performed under the nation's customary law, which the government officially recognizes in compliance with the Customary Marriage Act. An estimated 10% of Zimbabwean adult women are in polygamous marriages.
Where the girlfriend or partner is not recognised as married to the polygamous man, either because the man is married under civil law or because no customary marriage has been performed, she is often referred to as a 'small house'.

Joseph Hanlon, Jeannette Manjengwa and Teresa Smart, 2012
The news from Zimbabwe is usually unremittingly bleak. Perhaps no issue has aroused such ire as the land reforms in 2000, when 170,000 black farmers occupied 4,000 white farms. A decade later, with production returning to former levels, the land reform story is a contrast to the dominant media narratives of oppression and economic stagnation. Zimba...

Is polygamy outdated?March 19, 2010
Is polygamy in 2010 still relevant? Is there still polygamy today, or it has it evolved into something else? These are some questions I’m asking after attending a discussion in town yesterday. Polygamy, one person said at the discussion, was very dignified in the times of our long gone ancestors.

Diogenes Borealis: Mugabe: polygamy is no slippery slope
Zimbabwe's president Robert Mugabe has given a new spin to a familiar argument used by opponents of gay marriage; allowing gay marriages inevitably opens the legal door to polygamy. Mugabe said the exact opposite in a recent speech - that allowing Polygamy in Zimbabwe is in no way a legal precedent justifying gay marriage, reassuring the citizens of Zimbabwe that no one will be forced into a monogamous marriage:Addressing a gathering of pilgrims from across Africa in Marange on Saturday, to mark the Johanne Marange Apostolic Sect’s annual Passover, Mugabe once again castigated gays and lesbians describing them as worse than pigs and dogs.

Polygamy is recognized as legal under either civil law or customary law in many countries across the continent although the prevalence of Polygamy in Africa is said to have seen a marked decline in the past 40 years. Some view women in polygamous marriages as victims of socio-economic pressures, others point to the exposure to diseases while others simply want an answer to the more cosmetic question: how can you share your husband with someone else? The Polygamist by Sue Nyathi and The Secrets Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives by Lola Shoneyin delve into the complexities of polygamous marriages.
