Primordial fluctuations

Primordial fluctuations are density variations in the early universe which are considered the seeds of all structure in the universe. Currently, the most widely accepted explanation for their origin is in the context of cosmic inflation. According to the inflationary paradigm, the exponential growth of the scale factor during inflation caused quantum fluctuations of the inflaton field to be stretched to macroscopic scales, and, upon leaving the horizon, to "freeze in". At the later stages of radiation- and matter-domination, these fluctuations re-entered the horizon, and thus set the initial conditions for structure formation.

The statistical properties of the primordial fluctuations can be inferred from observations of anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background and from measurements of the distribution of matter, e.g., galaxy redshift surveys. Since the fluctuations are believed to arise from inflation, such measurements can also set constraints on parameters within inflationary theory.

A Note on the Consistency Condition of Primordial Fluctuations - CERN Document Server

We show that the squeezed limit of (N+1)-point functions of primordial correlation functions in which one of the modes has a very small wavenumber can be inferred from the spatial variation of locally measured N-point function. We then show how in single clock inflation a long wavelength perturbation can be re-absorbed in the background cosmology and how in computing correlation functions the integrals of the interaction Hamiltonian are dominated by conformal times of order of the short wavelength modes, when the long mode is already outside of the horizon. This allows us to generalize the consistency condition for N-point functions to the case in which the short wavelength fluctuations are inside the horizon and derivatives acts on them. We further discuss the consistency condition in the soft internal squeezed limit in which in an (N+M)-point function with (N+M) short modes the sum of the first N modes is a very soft momentum. These results are very useful to study infrared effects in Inflation.

ESA Science & Technology: Planck sees a cosmic journey 13 billion years in the making

Cosmologists using data from ESA's Planck satellite have compiled the first all-sky image of the distribution of dark matter across the entire history of the Universe as seen projected on the sky. This is made possible by analysing the tiny distortions imprinted on the photons of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) by the gravitational lensing effect of massive cosmic structures. As photons travelled through these structures, which consist primarily of dark matter, their paths became bent, slightly changing the pattern of the CMB. Although noisy, this image is the first measurement performed over almost the whole sky of the gravitational potential that distorts the CMB, and is one of the highlights of Planck's cosmological results. With these unique data, cosmologists can investigate 13 billion years of the formation of structure in the Universe. The data agree very well with the expectations from the leading cosmological model that describes the origin and evolution of cosmic structure in the Universe.
