Proto-Tai
Proto-Tai is the reconstructed common ancestor (proto-language) of all the Tai languages, including modern Lao, Shan, Lu, Tai Dam, Ahom, Northern Thai, Thai, Bouyei, and Zhuang. The Proto-Tai language is not directly attested by any surviving texts, but has been reconstructed using the comparative method. It has been reconstructed in 1977 by Fang-Kuei Li and by Pittayawat Pittayaporn in 2009.

Tai Languages with Alif Silpachai: Proto-Southwest-Tai Consonants
Proto-Southwest-Tai language (Ancient Thai/Old Thai) is an unattested, reconstructed common ancestor (proto-language) of all the Southwest Tai languages such as modern Thai, Lao, Shan, Northern Thai, Lue, Tai Dam, and many others. The script is based on an early form of the Thai language spoken and written by the Tais and their descendants in parts of what are now Thailand, Laos, Yunnan(China), and Shan State(Burma) during the Sukhothai period (around 1238–1583).

The World According to Kevin: Origin of the Tai Peoples
Comparative linguistic research seems to indicate that the Tai people were a proto Tai-Kadai speaking culture of southern China, and that they, like the Malay-Polynesians, may have originally been of Austronesian descent. Prior to inhabiting mainland China, the Tai are suspected to have migrated from a homeland on the island of Taiwan where they spoke a dialect of Proto-Austronesian or one of its descendant languages.

Khmu-minati: Food For Thought : Khmu Influence Tai/Lao?
I was as usual randomly looking for Khmu articles on a Saturday night and stumbled upon this discussion about how the Khmer, Lao and Thai influenced each other at Asia's Finest (I hate that place because of the trolls) and I thought I'd check it out since it came up when I was searching Khmu. Anyways if you scroll down the page to XigonCongchua's post with the huge block or quotes, you'll a list with the words Proto-Thai, and Proto-Khmu and that's where it gets interesting.
