Sierra Leone c 1944. RWAFF Zouave uniform with Fez and Cummerbund. | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
I have no idea what is going on here. One of the participants in this charade may be found in the more formal photograph The note on the back says ...."Cpl Saint (Cook), Self, RSM Barras, Cpl Flockart (?) possiby mistake for Flockhart.... Two extreme blokes wearing coats, caps and cummerbunds as worn by bandsmen and mess waiters. Mango tree behind." The decorative uniforms seem to indicate the RWAFF -,ROYAL WEST AFRICAN FRONTIER FORCE - as seen here The Cummerbunds would have been red as with the Fez. The short flared jackets are known as Zouaves , derived from the French Infantry Regiments of that name which wore them. These were also in red with yellow edging. However, I have seen them in Red with blue edging and black around the collar.

Carry on up the Dale: Chindits Special Force
There seems to be a fair bit of interest in the campaigns in Burma waged by the Chindits; certainly there are a few figure ranges being pushed at present. My late uncle was in the Royal Signals firstly in N Africa and then in Burma where he was attached to the Chindits, specifically the Royal West African Field Force, a Nigerian Brigade which formed a substantial proportion of the entire Chindit force.
