Ray Brown & The Whispers were a highly successful Australian rock band from 1964 to 1967. Led by singer Ray Brown, they ranked alongside The Easybeats, Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs and Normie Rowe as one of the most popular acts of the period. In 1964, the band played at 'The Bowl' a Sydney, NSW night club doing covers of popular songs such as "Shakin All Over".[citation needed]

Ray Brown and The Whispers
Ray Brown and the Whispers ‘Go To Him’ (Leedon, 1965)
The Nocturnes started out, like so many of their peers, as Shadows-style instrumentalists, playing their twang around Kogarah, Sans Souci, and the southern suburbs of Sydney, before recruiting Mersey-sounding/Hurstville-born singer Ray Brown and renaming themselves The Whispers for a post-Beatles world...

Derek's Daily 45: RAY BROWN AND THE WHISPERS - IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR
While I would make no claims that this cover in any way, shape or form stacks up to the wicked Wilson Pickett's version, this Australian version packs a particular wallop nonetheless (mostly in the hot brass and fuzzed out guitar). Hailing from Sydney, The Whispers (not to be confused with the great US vocal group) began life as a surf/ instrumental group until those pesky Beatles changed everything, at which point they recruited the good looking / OK singing Ray Brown as lead singer.

FLOWER BOMB SONGS: THE LONDON KNIGHTS - GO TO HIM
THE LONDON KNIGHTS - 'Go To Him'/'Dum Diddlee Dee' (Mike Records MK-4200) 1966 A certain amount of mystery surrounds this disc with some on-line sources suggesting that The London Knights were a group from Los Angeles. The latter information was probably taken from the liners of the CD release 'Hot Generation' that came out on Big Beat.
