Revolt of the Ciompi
The Revolt of the Ciompi was a popular revolt in Florence 1378 by wool carders known as ciompi (Italian pronunciation: [ˈtʃompi]), who rose up to demand a voice in the commune's ordering.
The ciompi were a class of labourers in the textile industry who were not represented by any guild. They were among the most radical of the lower-class groups, vegetable sellers and crockery vendors and the like, and resented the controlling power that was centred in the Arte della Lana, the textile-manufacturing establishment which guided the economic engine of Florence's prosperity, and was supported by the other major Guilds of Florence, the Arti maggiori.

The fifth descendant generation of Charissimo de’ Medici, one of two brothers who migrated to Florence in the Middle Ages, finds outstanding individuals with both lasting and significant contributions to history, the evolution and expansion of Florence, as well as the broadening of power and riches to the Medici family itself. So substantial were the accomplishments by so many of this branch and generation, they are deserving of their own accolades.

The left side of the Gorge: Ciompi Revolt: Florence, 1378
So, Machiavelli puts us at the scene in the spring of 1378, when the Albizzi faction in Florence hesitates to use force to put down a workers' revolt that aims to put the elite families who dominate the Parte Guelfa out of business. The spark that ignites the flame of revolution in Florence is the stirring resignation speech of one Salvestro de'Medici, a wealthy man who was sympathetic to the demands of the Ciompi (unskilled wool workers).

sauvage27: TUMULTO DEI CIOMPI - Morire per vivere (Revolt of the Ciompi - Dying to live)

Occupy Wall Street, another futile peasants’ protest | Fabius Maximus
Summary: We learn little about the Occupy Wall Street protests from the news media, which cover it like an alien invasion (see Glenn Greenwald’s articles at Salonhere and here for examples). No matter, as it's a commonplace and easily understood phenomenon. The masses (ie, peasants, peons, whatever) grow restive in oligarchic society. Protests are holidays in which they…
