Ridgeacre Branch
The Ridgacre Branch is a canal branch of the Wednesbury Old Canal, part of the Birmingham Canal Navigations, in the West Midlands, England. It opened in 1828, to serve collieries and iron works, and was disused by the 1960s. Except for its branches and a small section at the eastern end, which have been filled in, most of it is still in water, but it is not navigable as a low-level bridge carrying the Black Country New Road spans the entrance.

Captain Ahab's Watery Tales: Ridgacre Branch Canal - Birmingham Canal Navigations
Ridgacre Branch Canal - BCNCycling Expedition25th October 2009I recently took a look at the Swan Arm, a still navigable section of the Wednesbury Old Canal which stops at the recently installed Black Country Spine Road. A 3/4 mile branch canal was added in 1826 to reach some new coal mines in the area, known as the Ridgeacre Branch Canal, a name which has since been reused by the pub which sits on the junction.

North Star: Ridgacre Branch - a lost cause?
Interesting discussion on Canal World Discussion Forum about the present state of the unloved section of the Wednesbury Old Canal that is a dead-end off the top of the Ryders Green locks. After the BCN Marathon Challenge, one boat - I was on it - decided to venture up to the end, despute an unofficial sign stating that the canal was unnavigable.

West Midlands Exploration: The Halesowen Hub Hunters
Friday 1st March, and after stalking the wilds of North Birmingham last week, our intrepid explorers are in search of Black Country bounty by poaching pictures and pubs around about Halesowen… RIDGACRE: the day commences with the Secretary doing a solo safari, setting out from Black Lake on the lookout for canal remains. The Ridgacre Branch was part of the waterways network around Wednesbury and West Bromwich and a section of it is still in place today, including the stretch from an old basin by the Ridgacre pub through to Black Lake Bridge passing under the Midland Metro.

Darley's Daily Dawdle: The wonders of coal.
It’s funny how some smells are so thought provoking and evocative. At the end of our street in Tipton, where I grew up as a small child was the Birmingham New Main Line and at the other was a small general shop called Cotterills which was owned by a little old lady, Mrs.

Narrowboat Tacet: Finding Another Challenge
MondayBefore leaving our Oozells Street Loop mooring we had a coffee with Jim on nb Starcross, swapping more boaty tales and future plans, then it was time to head off up the main line  passing under the Engine Branch aqueduct, through Galton Tunnel and under the Stewart aqueduct, before taking a quick detour up the Spon Lane locks,  only to turn round and come back down. That was another bit of the BCN we hadn't done yet, and we didn't want to miss it.

Neodigital Art | Apertures | Mike10613's Blog
Narrow aperture If you read last weeks blog you will know the aperture is like a doorway that lets a lot of light in, if it’s open a lot and less light, if it’s open a little. How long the door way is open also determines how much light gets into the camera. You don't…
