San Francisco & San Jose Rail Road
The San Francisco and San Jose Railroad (SF&SJ) was the first railroad to link the communities of San Francisco and San Jose, California, running the length of the San Francisco Peninsula. The company incorporated in 1860 and opened the first portion of its route in 1863, completing the entire 49.5-mile (80 km) route in 1864. The company was consolidated with the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1870. Today, Caltrain and the Union Pacific Railroad continue to operate trains over the company's original route.

Following ghost tracks of long-forgotten railroad - SFGate
Between the Atlas Stair Building Co. that looks like a toy house, and Western Plywood, a lumber sales company, there is a wide gap with a few feet of half-buried railroad tracks pointing southwesterly, right through the Mission District. The city was built up around the railroad, Victorian houses crowding along the tracks through the Mission and Noe Valley. City explorers can follow the route though the Mission pretty much all the way to 26th and Guerrero streets by looking for structures built at odd angles, as if sliced by a knife. Tracking the train The old line began South of Market, headed south along Harrison Street and then turned southwest, through the Mission and a corner of Noe Valley, brushed past Glen Park, went through the Bernal Cut along San Jose Avenue, passed the eastern edge of City College, then to Ocean View and down the Peninsula, along the route of what is now Interstate 280 and the BART line to Millbrae. There were iron works, shipyards, canneries, a huge commercial printing industry and factories that made everything from mayonnaise to mattresses. San Francisco had perhaps 250 miles of steam railroad tracks in the city; you can still see pieces of old rail here and there, in South Beach, on the waterfront and at Fort Mason.

Receipt for prunes shipped by E&J Bender from Morgan Hill to San Jose, 1896I've had a couple articles here about how the dried apricots and prunes made it to the packing house; we learned about the San Tomas Drying Company and the trains coming down from Wrights, and we've heard about the packers having agents ready with train cars at Niles in the season. But were there other ways? Through another EBay find, I've got some more details.
