Teratological
Teratology is the study of abnormalities of physiological development. It is often thought of as the study of human congenital abnormalities, but it is much broader than that, taking in other non-birth developmental stages, including puberty; and other non-human life forms, including plants. The related term developmental toxicity includes all manifestations of abnormal development by toxic substances. These may include growth retardation, delayed mental development or other congenital disorders without any structural malformations.

Speaking of Monsters: A Teratological Anthology
Speaking of Monsters: A Teratological Anthology
Caroline Joan S. Picart, 2012
Despite its apparently monolithic definition, "teratology" (from the Greek word teras, meaning "monster," and the Latin logia, which is derived from the Greek logos, meaning "a speaking, discourse, treatise, doctrine, theory, science") seems infinitely malleable, flourishing in various rhetorical environments. Teratolo...

Sensualising Deformity: British Medical Journal Teratological Memoranda
Images courtesy of the BMJ Publishing Group, BMJ 1889, June 8; 1(1484): 1288–1289. Those of you interested in teratology - 19th century especially - will probably already be quite familiar with the British Medical Journal's Teratological Memoranda, but if you haven't had a spare hour or two to browse through their older archives looking for reports of "human monsters", we would like to direct you to articles such as this, which describes the birth of three monstrous infants, a pair of conjoined twins and a limbless child whose birth is attributed to the mother having "seen a fish she never thought existed".

Teratological Section of the Anatomical Museum of Modena | prettyawfulthings
Teratology is the study of abnormalities of physiological development. It is often thought of as the study of human birth defects. Currently, its most instrumental meaning is that of the medical study of teratogenesis, congenital malformations or individuals with significant malformations. interstice/confluence: Making myself a Monster: self-portraiture as teratological specimen
What is it that makes the objects and specimens of the medical museum so compelling and repelling in equal quantity? What is it about the malformations of the bottled monsters of the Teratological specimen that draws our horrified and delighted attention? Since the birth of what is known in the west as modern medicine, the word "monstrosities" has been used to describe physical deformities, ‘irreducible to the "proper body" in their singular, sometimes startling difference’ [1] These accidents of nature suggest something other than the normal self, and yet they are not outside our selves or nature, but recognisably part of it. That sense of alteriety which gives such specimens their fascination and appeal is tied to the uncanniness that is born of strangeness within the familiar.

Museum of Dust: Wunderkammer :: I say 'Teratology' Inky says 'Monsters'
Another must-have museum! With collections like the Hovius collection of bone pathology, the Bolk-Woerdeman collection of anatomy and congenital anomalies, and the Grevers collection of dental pathology, not to mention the collection of specimens with urogenital pathology and congenital anomalies donated by the old Amsterdam plague hospital, the Wilhelmina Gast Huis, added to the core anatomical collection of by Gerardus Vrolik (1775–1859) and his son Willem Vrolik’s Teratological additions, the Museum Vrolik has it all. Especially if ‘all’ means babies in jars, people’s faces in jars, and bits and pieces of sundry body parts… in jars.
