Virgin Mary shrines
In the culture and practice of some Christian churches - mainly, but not solely, the Roman Catholic Church - a Shrine to the Virgin Mary (or Marian shrine) is a shrine marking an apparition or other miracle ascribed to the Blessed Virgin Mary, or a site on which is centered a historically strong Marian devotion. Such locales are often the destination of pilgrimages
Some of the largest shrines are due to reported Marian apparitions to young and simple people on remote hilltops that had hardly been heard of prior to the reported apparition. The case of Saint Juan Diego's reported vision of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1531 is similar to the case of Saint Bernadette Soubirous's vision in 1858 of Our Lady of Lourdes. Both saints reported a miraculous Lady on a hilltop who asked them to request that the local priests build a chapel at the site of the vision. Both visions included a reference to roses and led to large churches being built at the sites. Like Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico, Our Lady of Lourdes is a major Catholic symbol in France. Both visionaries were eventually declared saints.
The number of pilgrims who visit some of these shrines every year can be significant. E.g. Lourdes with a population of around 15,000 people, receives about 5,000,000 pilgrims every year and within France only Paris has more hotel rooms than Lourdes. Over 1,000,000 pilgrims visit the Black Madonna statue in the Chapel of Grace in Altötting, Germany every year, where for more than 500 years miracles have been attributed to praying to the Virgin Mary at that shrine.

Abbey Roads: The Blessed Virgin and Islam: Two famous Marian shrines in Italy, one in Spain, provide sanctuary for sacred relics rescued from Muslim pillage and desecration.
Our Lady of Mercy, pray for us. The Holy House of Loreto and Our Lady of Good Counsel. Both popular piety and tradition holds that the Holy House and image of Our Lady of Good Counsel were transported by angels away from Muslim invaders. The Sacred Image of Good Counsel was carried from the Turkish onslaught of the Balkans.

Our Lady of the Bathtub #1 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
For the past several weeks I spent my summer walking through the city streets where I live, Revere, Massachusetts, and several of the surrounding cities hunting down and photographing lawn shrines of the blessed Virgin Mary. Though I live in a large and predominately Catholic community, lawn statues of the Virgin Mary have increasingly dwindled down in the past few decades as the cities and suburbs have become more and more gentrified. A few cities, most notably Somerville, Massachusetts and my own hometown, have a remarkably large population of Mary statues. I have photographed over 1000 statues on the lawns and in the backyards of private homes and I've learned a lot about the basic 4 or 5 different styles/molds of these statues and can identify them by their proper names, but my favorite Virgin Mary shrines are the ones in which she dwells in a bathtub! Quite odd, one would think at first, but quite practical too...and a great use of recycling. The bathtubs original purpose for the use as a shrine was to imitate the grotto (a rocky niche) in which St. Bernadette first saw an apparition of the Virgin Mary in a garbage dump in Lourdes, France in the 1850s, after which Lourdes became one of the largest religious pilgrimage sites in the world. These bathtubs, used to house religious statues, are stood up and usually buried partially in the ground where the lower part is filled with dirt or cement to anchor the bathtub. Often they are masoned with stones or brick to complete the grotto appearance. If you happen to walk through cities or towns with high concentrations of bathtub madonnas, you will likely see a few empty tubs in yards, as a result of older families who moved out of their homes and took their statues with them, leaving behind a heavy tub cemented into the ground. The bathtub Mary eventually evolved as manufacturers started to make smaller bathtub shaped niches to contain statues, some of which have a scallop-like shaped design that is more commonly seen today and referred to as a “Mary on a half shell”. The Bathtub Mary today is considered unattractive and rather tacky, but to the people who originally erected them, they are considered shrines of love, reverence and faith. When I first began my “Mary Project” it was really to capture the more quirky and kitschy side of religious lawn ornaments. I most certainly got a lot of that, but after a couple of weeks I started to see something just a bit deeper there. I got to meet and talk to some of the owners of these statues who just happened to be in their yards when I came across a statue and photographed it. They were always most welcoming and pleased that I wanted to take a picture of their Virgin Mary, and each one shared a bit of history about their own statue. In some way I’ve come to appreciate their respect and love for this symbolic figure who plays such a big role in their faith and religion. As a former Catholic who was very religious in my youth, I no longer share their faith anymore and would consider myself an atheist, but somewhere deep inside of me I still have a soft spot for the lady. In 1858 in Lourdes, a 14 year old girl believed she was visited by the Virgin Mary in a garbage dump. The past several decades this virgin has been venerated in bathtubs. You can’t get any more immaculate than that. (Statue located in Medford, MA)
