Von Bezold spreading effect
The Bezold effect is an optical illusion, named after a German professor of meteorology, Wilhelm von Bezold (1837–1907), who discovered that a color may appear different depending on its relation to adjacent colors.
It happens when small areas of color are interspersed. An assimilation effect called the von Bezold spreading effect, similar to spatial color mixing, is achieved.
The opposite effect is observed when large areas of color are placed adjacent to each other, resulting in color contrast.

The Effects of Cracks on the Perception of Paintings — Hamilton Kerr Institute
The illusion of pictorial depth can be compromised by visual features that emphasise the surface of a painting. The effect of varnish upon the perception of the pictorial image has been widely acknowledged, but the perceptual effect of craquelure – the pattern of cracks that naturally develops across the face of a painting – has been neglected. This project investigated some ways in which the eye’s reading of a painted image could be influenced by the cracks on a painting.
