Unknown painting of Sydney ‘girl’ confirmed to be by 7 times Archibald Prize Winner W.B. McInnes. It started with an email from an Australian in London to Banziger Hulme Fine Art Consultants. The gentleman explained he owned a portrait of his mother, painted in 1928 in Melbourne when she was just a girl of 16, but the painting was not signed. - PR11284678

The Archibald Prize - 90 years on.
They are unpacking the paintings in Sydney for the 2011 Archibald Prize, ninety years on. The prize was established in 1921, under a bequest of Mr J F Archibald, a Sydney journalist for the ‘best portrait of some man or woman distinguished in art, letters, science or politics painted by any artist resident in Sydney’ during the previous 12 months. Archibald could not have imagined but may have delighted in the controversy that continues to surround his prize each year. The first Archibald

Help With My Homework: William Dobell
First awarded in 1921, the Archibald lettuce cursorily became a scratch thirstily sought after by artistic creationists, not exactly because of the bills it offered as a rate and the nationality and motion-picture show to the public it created, but because it also gave artists an opportunity to have their lay beat sh deliver in a study art gallery which attracts a lot of people. Previously, portrayal artists had been more often than not restricted to public or private commissions and these exhibitions allowed their artwork to be viewed as a spartan art form.

The Linosaurus: Nancy Grant, continued
Nancy Grant (1911-1998) Modernist Australian painter, drawer and printmaker(continued) Thanks to reader Ruby Tuesday and some follow-up research today I’d like to share some first results following last weeks (before) posting. I've found in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia 12 linocuts (with plan drawings!) by painter and printmaker John Flexmore (1911-2003) donated by Nancy Grant with her own work in 1996 (two years before she died).

Creative Effort: Gayfield Shaw (1885-1961), printmaker and gallery director
Shaw was a prominent member of the Sydney art community during the early boom-period in Australian visual art that followed the end of the First World War. With the imminent sale of his former etching press by Sydney art dealer Josef Lebovic it seems opportune to look at his life and work.

Creative Writing for Money: William Dobell
First awarded in 1921, the Archibald lettuce quickly became a scratch eagerly sought after by artists, not exactly because of the money it offered as a assess and the publicity and motion-picture show to the public it created, but because it also gave artists an opportunity to have their lay down shown in a major art gallery which attracts a lot of people. Previously, portrait artists had been largely restricted to public or private commissions and these exhibitions allowed their artwork to be viewed as a life-threatening art form.
