Wheelock Academy
Wheelock Academy was the model academy for the five civilized tribes' academies. It was started as a missionary school for Choctaw girls, and is still owned by the Choctaw nation.
In 1832 the Academy was initiated by Alfred Wright, a physician and missionary who co-founded the nearby Wheelock Church. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965.

Wheelock Academy Native American Girls Boarding School | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Originally run as a missionary school for girls, the academy was named after the founder of Dartmouth College. It was taken over by the Choctaw Nation in the mid 1800's, later burned and rebuilt in the 1880's. Located northwest of Idabel Oklahoma. It is one of the National Park Service's National Historic Landmarks, and is listed as one of the 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in America. While it is in a state of disrepair, funding is being sought for restoration. This is also called Pushmataha Hall (don't you love that name?) and is the main school building. There are other structures on the site to the right and behind. Some people in the area say the school is haunted. The stories say that the staff were very strict with the girls, some did not survive their punishments and were secretly buried on the grounds. It is said they can sometimes be seen playing in the moonlight with organ music coming from the school with strange lights floating hither and yon. There is also supposed to be underground passages to various buildings with the ghost of an old groundskeeper accusing some of trespassing. Many stories about this old place.
