Whitefield's Tabernacle, Penn Street, Bristol | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Whitefield's Tabernacle in Penn Street BS1 built in 1753. The first open and independent congregation was founded in 1640, in a house that later became the Broadmead Baptist church. In 1670, the Quakers bought the old house of the Dominican Friars in Broadmead to use as a meeting house. Better known as Quakers Friars, it remained their home for nearly 300 years. One of the leading Quakers was Sir William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, whose main reason for founding Pennsylvania was a desire to set up a Quaker colony. William Penn was born in Bristol and baptised in the city church of St. Thomas, off Victoria Street. The church is dedicated to the martyr Thomas Becket.
