Whyos
The Whyos, a collection of the various post-Civil War street gangs of New York, was the city's dominant street gang during the late 19th century. The gang controlled most of Manhattan from the late 1860s until the early 1890s, when the Monk Eastman Gang defeated the last of the Whyos. The name came from the gang’s cry, which sounded like a bird or owl calling, "Why-oh!"

Sherlock Holmes & Mark Twain: The Adventure of the Whyos
Bill Peschel, 2014
Mark Twain’s fans know that he did not approve of Sherlock Holmes. He even parodied the detective and his methods in “A Double Barreled Detective Story.” But why? “The Adventure of the Whyos” hints at an answer. This 8,000-word short story, the first in a series, reveals that Twain had participated in several misadventures with Holmes. The story it...

Paddy Whacked: The Untold Story of the Irish American Gangster
T. J. English, 2006
The American mob has long been seen as run by Italians and their henchmen. Edgar-nominee English (Born to Kill) sets the record straight, emphasizing that Irish ingenuity first established the mob in the U.S. Close to two million Irish inundated the American Northeast in the aftermath of the Irish famine of the 1840s. Cliff Mass Weather Blog: Why is the Northwest Warm and California Dry? Part 1.
Many Northwest residents are asking the same questions: Why is it so warm this winter? Why so little snowfall in the mountains? Is the warmth and snow drought connected with human-caused global warming? Is there a connection with the cold and snow over the eastern U.S. and our anomalous weather? Or with the drought in California? What is the role of blob (the region of warm water off our coast the last year)? Today the Seattle Times front page headline called out the poor Cascade snowpack and showed a picture of the Snoqualmie Summit ski area that would bring depression to any ski enthusiast.
