The Dr. William Gunnell House is on the grounds of the Truro Anglican Church on the north side of Chain Bridge Road & Main Street and the Historic Fairfax County Courthouse. This is the house that Ranger John Mosby captured the Union area commander Brigadier General Edwin H. Stoughton, in bed, the night of March 9, 1863. The original target of the Fairfax Court House raid was Colonel Sir Percy Wyndham, a British subject in command of a Union Cavalry unit in Fairfax County. But in the morning hours of March 9, 1863, Colonel Wyndham was attending a social function in Washington, D. C. Colonel Wyndham had announced Mosby and his men were nothing more than common horse thieves and should be hung by the neck when captured. Colonel Mosby was informed of the absence of Colonel Wyndham while searching homes in the village of Fairfax Court House. After learning Wyndham's commanding officer, B. G. Edwin H. Stoughton was at the William Gunnell House, Mosby had a new target of his kidnapping plot. When Colonel Mosby arrived at the Dr. William Gunnell House his raiding party of 9 men were able to gain entry into the residence by waking Lieutenant Prentiss of the general's staff, by announcing he had dispatches for the general. Lt. Prentiss opened the door for 6 of Mosby's Raiders and he was greeted by having a revolver stuck in his ribs by Colonel Mosby. Colonel Mosby entered the bedroom where General Stoughton lay unconscious after an evening of drinking, and pulled the covers back to slap him with a riding glove. Mosby then commanded, "Get up General, and come with me." The general abruptly replied, "What is this! Do you know who I am, sir!" Mosby stated, "I reckon I do general. Did you ever hear of Mosby?" General Stoughton answered, "Yes, have you caught him?" Colonel Mosby answered, "I am Mosby-he has caught you." When President Lincoln was informed of the exploits of Colonel Mosby at Fairfax Courthouse he made the statement, "I can create another general with the stroke of a pen, but I can't replace horses with such ease." He then listened to his senior staff officers discussing the possibility of Mosby's Rangers riding into Washington, D. C. to kidnap the President of the United States. President Lincoln couldn't believe what he was hearing. He stated, "Look at you men. You speak as Mosby as though he is a ghost, a gray ghost."
