Windsor Bridge (New South Wales)
Windsor Bridge is an old bridge in Windsor, New South Wales, Australia. It is built in 1874 for horse-drawn vehicles and foot traffic. It spans over the Hawkesbury River.
A new bridge is proposed to replace the old bridge due to claimed but disputed safety reasons. The old bridge is expected to be demolished after the new bridge opens.
Windsor Bridge is acknowledged as being highly significant and is individually listed on the Hawkesbury LEP and on the former Roads and Traffic Authority (Roads and Maritime Services) s170 Register.
RTA (now RMS) Statement of Significance for Windsor Bridge is below:
'It has a high level of historic, technical, aesthetic and social significance as an important historical and physical landmark in one of the State's pre-eminent historic towns, and in the wider Sydney region. It is the oldest extant crossing of the Hawkesbury River ... The River and this crossing of it has defined the life of several generations of local inhabitants ... As the suburban outskirts of Sydney widen and come closer to the still distinct and distinctive Macquarie Town, the rich history of the area and its physical remains become increasingly important to the community's sense of identity.'

Windsor - New South Wales - Australia - Travel - smh.com.au
Windsor Major centre on the Hawkesbury River with much historic interest and charm. Governor Lachlan Macquarie was a great builder and dreamer. He established the five Macquarie towns in the Hawkesbury Valley - Windsor, Richmond, Castlereagh, Wilberforce and Pitt Town. Of all these towns it is Windsor which stands as a monument to Macquarie. There is a current school of thought which claims that what modern development has done to Windsor is disgraceful. Certainly the modern bridge, the wide road which mixes historic houses with service stations, the modern malls and the refusal to keep this old town in some kind of pristine condition is shameful. However, what is left, particularly St Matthews Church, the Court House, Tebbut's observatories, the graveyard at the church, and the numerous buildings dating back to the early nineteenth century are all of interest to anyone who wants to grasp what life was like in the colony's third settlement. -

Recent media reports on the campaign to prevent the destruction of Thompson Square have also appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald and the Australian. The RAHS is supporting a National Heritage nomination for Thompson Square which was co-authored by our Councillor and Past President Dr Ian Jack.
