Wycinanki (vee-chee-non-kee) is a Polish version of the art form of papercutting. Wycinanki in Poland originated with sheepherders cutting designs out of tree bark and leather.[1] Paper wycinanki dates from the early to mid 19th century.[2] Colorful wycinanki were pasted on furniture or roof beams as decoration, hung in windows, and given as gifts. The Surprising Art of Wycinanki (Polish Papercutting) | Art & Soul
Historically, Polish papercutting or Wycinanki has been done using sheep shears because they were often the only cutting instruments available to people in the rural areas. Wycinanki designs are generally cut freehand—that is without preliminary sketching—and from a single sheet of paper. The element of the unexpected in the outcome keeps it fun and exciting.

Wycinanki: Polish papercut art - Decorator's Notebook
I’m notoriously rubbish at getting things framed and have boxes full of ephemera, prints and doodles that I’ve been intending to hang on my walls for yonks. However, with half an hour to kill on Tottenham Court Road before dinner here (go, it’s great) I found myself in Habitat and remembered to pick up a Bacall frame for one particularly lovely scrap from my collection. It’s a wycinanki, an intricate Polish papercut. {both Decorator’s Notebook} Wycinanki (pronounced vee-chee-non-key) were originally made by shepherds from scraps of leather or tree bark and used to decorate their huts.
