Zyndram of Maszkowice
Zyndram z Maszkowic (Zyndram of Maszkowice, c. 1355 – c. 1414) was a Polish 14th and 15th century knight. His coat of arms was Słońce.
Zyndram was first mentioned in 1388 as a mayor of Jasło. He bought the post from a certain Jakusz Trzop for 100 grzywnas. He was also the Sword-bearer of the Crown. In February 1390, Zyndram took part in the military campaign against the Teutonic Order. The following year, he was yet again called to arms and took part in several battles against the Order in Lithuania and northern Poland.
Zyndram was ordered to organize the defense of a nodal castle of Kamieniec Litewski, east of the Białowieża Forest. Probably for successfully fulfilling this task, he was promoted to the starost of Jasło. In 1409, Zyndram was called to arms by king Władysław II Jagiełło to take part in his offensive against the Teutons. During the famous Battle of Grunwald of 1410, Zyndram was the Grand Camp Leader of the Crown and commander of the Banner of Kraków, composed of elite troops and holding the banner of the whole army. According to Historiæ Polonicæ by Ioannes Longinus, it was the unit commanded by Zyndram that killed the Teutonic commander, Ulrich von Jungingen. For many years, it was also believed that he was commander of all Polish troops in the battle, but recent research proved that this was but a wrong translation of Longinus' chronicle. His part in the battle was also described by Henryk Sienkiewicz in his novel The Teutonic Knights.
After the campaign, Zyndram returned to his domain. In 1413, he extended his domain by renting the village of Przesiecznica from the bishop of Przemyśl in exchange for the defense of the area against the Tartars and bandits from the Beskides. The exact date of his death is unknown, however on June 5, 1414 his wife, Anna, was mentioned as "Widow of Zyndram".

The Battle of Grunwald Monument in the Matejko Square, Kraków. One of the biggest medieval battles, the Battle of Grunwald took place on July 15 1410, between the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania on one side (estimated 39,000 troops, under the command of King Władysław Jagiełło), and the Teutonic Knights on the other (about 27,000 troops, under the command of the Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen). While less numerous, the Teutonic army had advantages in discipline, military training, and superior military equipment. Their heavy cavalry was one of the best in Europe, and on the opposite side only the Great Banner of Cracow, the elite Polish heavy cavalry, was of comparable military value. Both forces were composed of troops from several states and lands, including numerous mercenaries. At noon of 15th July 1410, the forces of Grand Duke Vytautas started an all-out assault on the left flank of the Teutonic forces, near the village of Stębark. The Lithuanian cavalry was supported by a cavalry charge of several Polish banners on the right flank of the enemy forces. The enemy heavy cavalry counter-attacked on both flanks and fierce fighting occurred. After more than an hour, the Lithuanian light cavalry started to break and withdraw, but soon the withdrawal turned into a rapid retreat towards the marshes and woods. Only three banners of Smolensk commanded by Semen Lingwen, son of Algirdas and brother of both Vytautas and Jagiełło, remained on the right flank. Soon one of them was totally destroyed while the remaining two were backed up by the Polish cavalry held in reserve and broke through the enemy lines to the Polish positions. Heavy cavalry of the Order started a disorganised pursuit after the fleeing Lithuanians and entered the marshes, where Vytautas started to reorganise his forces. At the same time heavy fighting continued on the left flank of the Polish forces. After several hours of fierce struggles, the Teutonic cavalry started to gain the upper hand. According to Ioannes Longinus, the Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen personally led a cavalry charge on the strongest Polish unit - the Great Banner of Cracow. The Polish ranks started to waver and for a moment the flag of the banner felt. However, it was soon recaptured by the Polish knights and king Władysław Jagiełło ordered most of his reserves to enter combat. The arrival of fresh troops allowed the Poles to repel the enemy assault and the forces of Ulrich von Jungingen were weakened. At the same time his reserves were still busy pursuing the scattered Lithuanian cavalry. When they finally returned to the battlefield, it was already too late for the Teutonic charge to succeed and the forces of the Order started the withdrawal. Ulrich von Jungingen decided to outflank the Polish forces by attacking the emptied right flank with 16 banners of heavy cavalry, until then held in reserve. Jagiełło threw in all his remaining reserves, as well as several already tired units. Soon Grand Duke Vytautas managed to reorganise part of his forces, returned to the battlefield, and also joined the fierce fighting. Despite heavy resistance, the 16 banners of the Grand Master were surrounded and almost annihilated. Ulrich von Jungingen died in battle. Seeing the fall of their Grand Master, the rest of the Teutonic forces started a withdrawal. The defeat of the Teutonic Order was complete. The Teutons lost ca. 8.000 soldiers killed in the battle and 14.000 taken captive. Most of approximately 250 members of the Order were also killed, including much of the Teutonic leadership. Apart from Ulrich von Jungingen himself, the Polish and Lithuanian forces killed also the Grand Marshal Friedrich von Wallenrode, Grand Komtur Kuno von Lichtenstein and Albrecht von Schwartzburg, the Grand Treasurer Thomas von Merheim. Komtur of Brandenburg, Markward von Salzbach and mayor Schaumburg of Sambia were executed by order of Vytautas after the battle. The Teutonic Order state was defeated and never recovered its former influence. It still existed though, being finally destroyed by the Kingdom of Poland one hundred years later, after the Polish–Teutonic War of 1519–1521.
